Spotting the Signs: Does My Child Need Early Orthodontic Intervention?

All parents want what’s best for their children—including healthy, confident teeth! While braces are often thought of as a rite of passage for teenagers (or in some cases, adults), many orthodontic problems can actually be detected and addressed much earlier. In fact, the American Association of Orthodontics recommends that all children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. That said, how can you tell if your child might need braces or early orthodontic treatment? Here’s what you need to know and a few signs to look out for.

Crooked or Crowded Teeth

If your child’s teeth seem to overlap, twist, or grow in at unusual angles, it may be a sign of crowding. Crowding often becomes more noticeable as permanent teeth start to erupt, and early intervention can sometimes make room for these teeth to grow in properly.

Gaps Between Teeth

Similarly, while some spacing is normal—especially while the baby teeth are falling out—if there are any excessive gaps present, it may signal that the teeth aren’t aligning correctly or that the jaw isn’t developing as it should.

Obvious Bite Problems

You should also pay close attention to how your child’s top and bottom teeth fit together. Some common bite issues, like overbites, underbites, open bites, or crossbites, can affect chewing, speaking, or even jaw development if left untreated. If your child complains of jaw pain, has difficulty chewing or speaking, or has a noticeable bite problem, you should speak with their orthodontist.

Thumb Sucking or Prolonged Pacifier Use

Habits like thumb sucking or extended pacifier use beyond age 3 or 4 can also impact tooth and jaw alignment. This can even lead to bite issues like open bites or protruding, crooked teeth. If you’re unable to curb your child’s habit, you should coordinate with an orthodontist.

Mouth Breathing or Snoring

Sometimes orthodontic problems are linked to airway issues. If your child regularly breathes through their mouth, snores or gasps for air at night, or simply has difficulty closing their lips, an orthodontic evaluation can be helpful.

By identifying issues early, orthodontists can guide proper jaw development, make space for the incoming teeth, and sometimes even reduce the need for more complex treatment later on. Not every child will end up needing early orthodontic intervention, but a professional evaluation is the best way to know for sure!
