Since Invisalign aligners are clear, comfortable, and convenient, it’s not surprising that over 17 million patients have chosen them over traditional braces. If you’re considering following in their footsteps, there are some things you should know beforehand so your transition into life with clear aligners is smoother. Here are a few!
1. Keeping Your Aligners on for 20+ Hours Is Crucial
Oftentimes, patients assume that – since the aligners are removable – they can take them out whenever they want. That’s not the case. In fact, if you want to avoid significant treatment plan delays, you need to wear your aligners for a minimum of 20 hours a day.
2. You May Need IPR (Interproximal Reduction)
Another common misconception is that Invisalign and clear aligners are synonymous. In reality, Invisalign treatment can involve several other orthodontic tools, including IPR. This painless procedure allows your orthodontist to remove a sliver of your enamel, creating space for your teeth to move.
3. Any Discomfort You Experience Will Be Temporary
When you first put on your aligners, they will feel tight. The good news is that any soreness, pressure, or discomfort you experience will be temporary. Plus, you can alleviate it even sooner if you sip on cool water, eat soft foods, like cottage cheese, and take OTC pain medication as directed.
4. It’s Best to Avoid Crunchy and Sticky Foods
Although Invisalign doesn’t come with any dietary restrictions, there are some foods that can cause a tooth to chip or an attachment to break. That’s why patients are encouraged to avoid (or – at the very least – exercise caution with) hard pretzels, raw almonds, taffy, caramel-filled candies, and the like.
5. You Can Still Play Sports
If you play sports or you like to ride your bike, run, or skateboard to stay active, don’t worry – you don’t have to give that up once you get braces. You should, however, talk to your orthodontist about ways to protect your smile, like wearing a mouthguard. That way, you’re significantly less likely to experience a dental or orthodontic emergency.
