Although Invisalign does not hurt, it is very normal to experience soreness and sensitivity immediately following the transition to a new set of aligners. After all, that’s when your teeth are moving the most! The good news is that symptoms like these are only temporary, and there are several steps you can take to alleviate them even sooner.
1. Transition to Each New Set Before Bed
As mentioned above, your teeth are moving the most in the hours following the transition to a new set of aligners. So, consider making the switch right before bed! That way, you can sleep through the period that’s typically the most uncomfortable. Come morning, your symptoms will have faded substantially.
2. Wear Your Aligners as Much as Possible
Oftentimes, patients struggling with discomfort want to remove their aligners. Although this will provide immediate relief, it will ultimately extend the adjustment period. That’s why it’s so important to do the opposite: wear your aligners as much as possible.
3. Use a Cold Compress
Another great way to alleviate any symptoms that arise is by using a cold compress or a towel-wrapped ice pack. Simply place it against the outside of your cheek for 10 minutes at a time, and, before you know it, inflammation and discomfort will subside. Sipping on cool water can help, too!
4. Avoid Crunchy Foods
To put it simply, eating crunchy foods will only exacerbate your symptoms. So, don’t eat whole apples, raw almonds, hard pretzels, and the like immediately following the transition to a new set of aligners. Instead, stick to softer foods, like plain yogurt, oatmeal, scrambled eggs, and bananas.
5. Take OTC Pain Medication as Directed
Finally, if nothing else seems to be working, you can take OTC pain medication. Just make sure to follow the directions on the label! It’s also a good idea to ask your orthodontist if they have any recommendations, since some prefer ones that aren’t anti-inflammatory.
