Whether your family is heading out for a weekend getaway or a longer, extended holiday vacation, traveling with Invisalign doesn’t have to be stressful! With a little planning and a few smart habits, your child or teen can stay on top of their orthodontic treatment no matter where they go. Here are a few key tips to keep in mind.

Tip #1. Pack an Invisalign Travel Kit

Keeping everything together in one easy-to-grab kit can make a big difference! Include a travel-sized toothbrush and toothpaste, dental floss or floss picks, Invisalign cleaning crystals or mild hand soap, and your Invisalign storage case, as well as extra elastic bands if needed.

Tip #2. Stick to the 22-Hour Rule

The most critical aspect of Invisalign treatment is wearing the aligners for the required 22 hours each day, only removing them to eat and brush. It may not be easy for your child to comply, especially if you’re eating or traveling at odd times of day, but setting timers or giving them gentle reminders can go a long way in preventing setbacks or lost aligners.

Tip #3. Bring Their Previous Aligners

You can never predict when your child might lose or damage an aligner by accident; however, you can be prepared for these instances by having their previous set of Invisalign trays with you. This is often the next-best option for keeping things on track until you can get home to their orthodontist for replacements.

Tip #4. Stay Hydrated

Encourage your child to carry a refillable water bottle with them while you’re out and about; sipping water throughout the day helps to reduce dry mouth and keeps the aligners from trapping food particles or bacteria. Plus, it’s the only beverage they won’t have to remove their Invisalign to enjoy! For anything else, especially sugary sodas or sports drinks, be sure they remove their trays.

With a little preparation, traveling with Invisalign can be worry-free; however, you’ll need to encourage your child or teen to make smart choices and practice good habits every moment you’re away from home.
