How to Tell If Your Child Needs Braces: 3 Signs Every Parent Should Know

Are you noticing changes in your child’s smile? Slightly crooked teeth or an overbite may not seem obvious right away, but at what point should you consider talking to an orthodontist about braces? If you’re unsure, it’s okay! Instead of worrying about whether to call and schedule an appointment right away, here are three signs to watch for.

Overcrowding

Genetics, thumb sucking, and even stubborn baby teeth that refuse to fall out can all be reasons for overcrowding. If you notice small areas of overlap, you don’t need to worry, but call an orthodontist if teeth are so close together that brushing and flossing are nearly impossible. This condition can make it harder for your child to breathe, speak and even eat normally. Cavities can also develop when overcrowding leads to poor oral hygiene. These are the kinds of problems you want to avoid at all costs, so be prepared to start discussing the idea of braces.

Misaligned Bites

Does your child struggle to eat comfortably? Do they tend to bite the inside of their cheeks? The reason might be an overbite, underbite, crossbite, or open bite that affects how their teeth come together. Bite misalignment does more than impact your child’s appearance and self-esteem; it can also cause jaw pain and enamel wear that, if left untreated, can lead to lasting oral health issues. Don’t assume this will go away on its own. Your child will need braces to make these problems disappear.

Excessive Spacing Between Teeth

You may think it’s cute when your child has a small gap between their front teeth when they smile, and in some cases, it may not be a concern. However, if multiple gaps exist or the space is too wide, braces may be the right tool to bring their teeth back together. Excessive spacing can make it harder for teeth to work together and can lead to bite problems. The only way to fix it is by scheduling an appointment with an orthodontist so they can evaluate the issue and determine whether braces are the right option.

While you shouldn’t assume the worst if you notice your child’s teeth changing, don’t dismiss these signs if you notice them. It’s always better to err on the side of caution and call to schedule an appointment. Only an orthodontist can determine whether braces are the right solution.
