Breast milk comes with a seemingly endless number of benefits. In addition to providing your baby with antibodies that can help them fight off viruses and bacteria, breastfeeding helps with the development of your little one’s smile! Keep reading for four interesting facts about nursing and oral health!

#1. Breastfeeding May Help Build a Better Bite

According to a study published in the Journal of the American Dental Association, babies who were breastfed exclusively for the first six months were less likely to have open bites, crossbites, and other teeth alignment issues. With that being said, other factors will play a role in whether or not your child will need braces when they get older, like pacifier use, thumb-sucking, and genetics. Therefore, it’s a good idea to schedule an appointment with their orthodontist for them around age seven.

#2. You Don’t Need to Stop Nursing When Your Baby Gets Teeth

Many moms wonder if they should stop nursing once their baby’s teeth begin to break through the gum line. The answer? It’s completely up to you and what you feel is best. While the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends nursing for the first 12 months, the World Health Organization encourages moms to breastfeed until the child is two. By that point, they will have quite a few chompers!

#3. Breastfeeding Helps Prevent Baby Bottle Tooth Decay

All too often, parents forget that baby teeth can get cavities. That’s why putting your little one to sleep at night with a bottle is discouraged. With that being said, it is important to remember that both formula and breast milk contain sugar. Therefore, you should use a soft, clean, moist washcloth to wipe down their gums both morning and night (preferably after eating and before bedtime).

#4. Caring for Your Own Teeth Is Equally as Important

As parents, it’s natural to prioritize your baby’s needs before your own. However, it’s important to remember to practice self-care, especially when it comes to simple things like brushing and flossing your teeth. In addition to keeping your smile beautiful and your bite strong, implementing a solid oral hygiene routine will ensure your mouth stays free from infection.

If breastfeeding is the best fit for you and your baby, then your little one’s smile will reap the benefits. Just make sure to keep their teeth and gums happy and healthy by prioritizing their oral care from the start!
