Tooth sensitivity is something that most of us deal with at some point throughout our lives—and it can happen for a variety of reasons and affect smiles of all sizes, shapes and ages! That said, if your child is dealing with oral sensitivity, you might be wondering what the cause of the issue is and how it can be effectively handled. By understanding tooth sensitivity, it becomes easier to prevent and treat! Here’s more from your pediatric dentist about some of the common causes of tooth sensitivity in children and how the issue is generally treated.

Common Causes of Tooth Sensitivity in Children

The trigger for tooth sensitivity isn’t always obvious, but it usually can be traced back to poor oral hygiene. A few of the most common causes include:

  • Poor brushing habits – Improper brushing can lead to tooth and gum sensitivity, as it allows food particles to remain unchecked inside the mouth and fuel cavity-causing bacteria.
  • Cavities and decay – If tooth decay is able to infiltrate the enamel and make its way deeper into the tooth, it can cause sensitivity and pain that often necessitates treatment.
  • Enamel erosion – If your child’s teeth are constantly exposed to sugary or acidic foods and drinks (like fruit juice and sodas), their enamel can become eroded and increasingly sensitive.
  • Sinus infections – Even a simple sinus infection can cause oral sensitivity since the sinuses can press down on the upper teeth and cause excess pressure on their nerves.
  • Loose or cracked fillings – Even though fillings are designed to replace areas of decay, they aren’t meant to last forever and if they become loose or compromised, patients usually feel sensitivity.
  • Development of permanent teeth – It’s also common for children to experience oral sensitivity as their baby teeth fall out and are replaced with their permanent ones.

Tips for Combating Tooth Sensitivity

Even though certain causes of tooth sensitivity cannot be prevented, they can still be managed and treated. Encouraging a proactive approach to your child’s oral hygiene is crucial; if they’re brushing and flossing daily, they’re actively lowering their risk of oral health issues that might result in increased sensitivity.

You might also consider products designed for sensitive teeth. Certain desensitizing kinds of toothpaste, as well as toothbrushes designed for sensitive teeth, are excellent options that are widely available. Professional fluoride treatments are also available to strengthen and protect your little one’s teeth moving forward. It’s also worth mentioning that fluoride is often added to local water sources, so be sure that your child is staying hydrated!

Of course, your child’s dentist is the best solution for identifying the cause of oral sensitivity and prescribing treatment. While the issue is relatively common, that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be swiftly handled!
